The market runs on the ten-week summer analyst class the global banks recruit from June, the off-cycle and part-time internships the banks, insurers and securities houses post through the semester for students in Hong Kong, and the Management Trainee programmes (HSBC, Hang Seng, BOCHK, AIA, Swire, Jardines, CLP, MTR, Cathay Pacific) that are the local answer to a graduate scheme. Nobody runs a spring week; the insight programmes are APAC-wide and mostly online. The eligibility line is what to read first: the local banks, insurers, conglomerates and the government want the right to work in Hong Kong, many postings ask for Cantonese or Mandarin, and the Chinese securities houses expect Mandarin, while the US banks' and trading firms' summer classes carry neither. A non-local graduate of a Hong Kong university stays two years on IANG; everyone else needs the firm to sponsor a General Employment Policy visa, which the global banks and trading firms do and the local firms mostly do not. Management Trainee programmes open from September (HSBC, Hang Seng and BOCHK in the autumn, the conglomerates from October to January) for a July or September start. Off-cycle and part-time internships are posted all year, a few weeks before they start, with peaks in June for the autumn semester and in November for January. HKU, CUHK and HKUST break from mid May to the end of August, which is when the summer class runs.
