Read this before you compare it to the real thing
BrainsFirst publishes what its four games measure and nothing about how they play. We could not find the mechanics anywhere we would trust, so these are not reconstructions of Collect, Activate, Connect and Synchronise. They are standard cognitive tasks chosen because they load the same four abilities, and they keep the published names only so you can tell which is which. Expect the real games to look and feel nothing like these.
What each one is
- Collect. Working memory that has to be updated on every item, not just held.
- Activate. Anticipation and timing, extrapolating rather than reacting.
- Connect. Control and mental flexibility: inhibiting the old rule after a switch.
- Synchronise. Sustained attention, and whether it holds steady once responding is automatic.
162 points on a perfect run. Every response task scores hits less false alarms, so pressing on everything scores nothing.
Can you even practise these?
Partly. The underlying abilities move very little with practice, which is why firms buy these tests. What does move is the cost of the first two minutes: knowing what a two-back task feels like, or that a rule is about to flip, means you are not learning the game on the clock. That is the gain here, and it is real but small.
