Verbal Statements

Six tabs of text about one company and 49 statements to judge true, false or cannot say in twelve minutes. This is the format of Aon's scales verbal, the verbal reasoning test in the same family as the numerical test Nomura, UBS, Morgan Stanley and BNP Paribas send for spring weeks and internships.

How it is scored

One point for every statement judged correctly, out of 49, and nothing deducted for a wrong answer. Skipped statements score nothing and cannot be returned to. The run ends when the clock runs out or when the last statement is answered, whichever comes first.

The tab you have open when you answer is recorded and shown at the end, so you can see how often you were looking in the right place. It never changes the score. Every miss is listed afterwards with the answer, the tab that held the evidence and the sentence that settles it.

Where we had to choose

Prep sites and candidates describe the format the same way: six tabs about one company, statements judged true, false or cannot say, and a clock most often given as 49 statements in 12 minutes, which is what the drill uses. Aon publishes no marking scheme. Prep sites report a deduction for wrong answers on the real test; we score a point per correct answer and nothing off, and say so, because a rule we cannot confirm should not teach you to leave statements blank.

The split is the part we were told rather than read: students who sat the real test in the 2026/27 cycle put cannot say at about a fifth of the statements, so 10 of the 49 here are cannot say and the rest split evenly between true and false. The company, its people and its products are invented and change every run.

How to work through one

Read the six tab names before the first statement, so you know where each kind of fact lives. The statement usually names its tab: a person is Executive board, a city is Locations, a plan is Strategy. Then ask one question: does a sentence on that tab say this, say the opposite, or say nothing about it? A statement that sounds likely is not true, and one that sounds unlikely is not false; if the tabs do not settle it, the answer is cannot say. Fifteen seconds a statement means you find the sentence and move on.

The rest of the assessment

Aon's numerical test in the same format, six tabs of figures rather than text, is in Data Statements. Nomura also sends the Motion planning puzzle; Aon's deductive format is in Switch, its inductive one in Inductive Reasoning, what is known about each firm's set is on the firm reference, and every ranked game feeds the overall leaderboard.
